Mall day

The next day, we sped past breakfast and devotion and headed off to Junction, a mall in Nairobi. After passing through security we bought local SIM cards from Safaricom, a telecom company.

We had until 12:30pm to look around the mall before lunch. Most of us had to get cash and we were all so surprised to see lots of fully armed guards and vehicles because they were taking the money out of the ATMs. At lunch time we had good food and then went to the Maasai Market which was only on a Thursday (it was a Thursday!). The instant you stepped into the market you had lots of people swarming you trying to sell you different things. When you took attention on one particular stall the owner would try so hard to make you buy something from them. We ended up spending much more money than intended to because the quality of things being sold was a lot better than we had expected. In the end I got a really cool chess set - the pieces are different animals made of stone.

As we were waiting to be picked up, we ended up sitting in the shade and talking to a guy who was doing the same. It turned out that he was a music producer, but he also worked with homeless youth from the Kibera. He used to live in Kibera himself.

After returning to our Mayfield accommodation everyone took the opportunity to relax. It was a full day, and not enough water had been drunk!

  1. The Maasai Market sounds like another full-on experience! It was cool that you ran into a man working with homeless youth. Has language been much of an issue, or do a lot of people speak English? By the way Russell and Keith passed on what your team has been up to at the church service this morning, as well as showing some great photos of you all (loving Rodney's birthday "cake"!). Four different people prayed for you, including for the church gatherings you'll be involved in today. Looking forward to hearing all about it!

  2. English has not been a problem - until today. Thank you for the prayers and encouragement. We had a great church service today, but our blog is running a bit behind! 😉
