After greeting the principals and teachers, we took a tour around the facilities. The centre is completely self-sufficient. Henry the principal is an amazing man, who grew up in the Elma Barnet Centre, then went away to university to study. I had a very good conversation with him over chai.

We took chai in the dining hall, and then went to the school to visit the children. That was an awesome experience!
Logan and Jesse started a football game which the principal and one of the high school students joined in. The ground was rough, but it was fun to watch - and then gradually all of the primary school students joined in. It was crazy to watch everyone kicking this ball around - no rules, all ages. Heaps of fun!

Principal Henry sounds like an inspiring man. How great to be able to come back to where you grew up and apply your learning to benefit others in a similar position. I love how the school is completely sustainable. I imagine you and the principal would have been able to swap interesting school management stories!
ReplyDeleteThe football stories and photo remind me of a game of football we had in a Fijian village a couple of years ago - the kids there also all gradually joined in with the all ages, no rules game.
Great photos that help place what you're doing in some visual context. Not sure I've seen solar panels on a rabbit hutch before... And good to see the famed ugali!
It has been such a great time, and the children are just delightful to work with.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers work very hard for the children - I have had some good conversations with them.
I hope to do some science study with the high school students that looks into the sustainability aspects. The solar panels would make a perfect physics example, and the almost complete biogas plant a good chemistry example.
